Look, another entry already ;).
It’s a short summary of what I’ve been up to for the past… 1,5 year. If someone told me that this will keep me so busy I wouldn’t believe it ;).
I study Informatics & Econometrics and my speciality is Computer Graphics & Multimedia.
The first year was a total disaster. Seriously. Subcjects were boring, but overwhelming. What’s worse I’m still wondering if any of them was of any use.
My job at that time was quite well paid yet time-consuming and irritating (I will write a separate entry on this matter) and my parents’ marriage was hanging by a thread (and I really don’t feel like writing about it anytime soon).
Some of you might say: you’ve chosen the faculty yourself and it’s boring? Yes, that’s the way it is. I wouldn’t have chosen it if the speciality was different. I don’t know how it looks like in other countries, but here the speciality starts with the second year and the first is meant for all those difficult subjects which will make half of your group change the faculty or school. We had micro- and macroeconomics (yes, separete subject for each), mathematic analysis, statistics (which continues) and other mostly mathematic oriented stuff. Blah.
The only subjects which might be considered more or less useful were Databases and Programming. Unfortunately we did not learn how to use databases on websites and the only programming language we got to know was Pascal, which is out of use anyway.
Fortunately, this losing streak ended with the first year. On the second, we started our speciality and at last something worth our attention appeared in our schedules.
Few examples:
- Computer Graphics and Multimedia, which can be also known as Game Developing :). It seemed quite great at the beginning, but now it’s just a mess. Our tutor wanted to show us every possible way of creating games and you know how it is: when you learn all you know nothing.
Well, learning various techniques might sound good, but the goal of this subject is to create a video game. And how on Earth are we supposed to do that if we have only basics in few techniques? He knew that most of us (if not all) will use Flash to create it, but we had only +/- 2 hours connected with Flash. Marvelous.
As for the game itself, here’s our groups plan: we want it to be in Silent Hill-ish dark climate (anyone surprised?). FPP (First Person Perspective) with logical riddles. Escape type, probably. Well that’s the plan, we will see if we will be able to create it.
We are sure that the main character will be female and that there will also appear a second, male, character who is based on… I know, no one who knows me would ever guess ;), on Ran/Aya Fujimiya in Side B version <3 <3 <3. *cough*
I’ll post the game here if it gets decent enough ;D.
- Webdesign: another subject which seemed ok at the beggining, but turned out not so great.
Of course, we had to start with basics. Waste of time, seriously. I’m not the best coder, but in times when designs are based on div/css we were supposed to create iframe.
It got even better when PHP started. All we did were few forms. None of them was really useful, not to mention the fact that if you use action=”mailto:” it will not work. You need a PHP script wchich will send the messege to you. And those are not empty words, I created such form like two weeks ago ;D. Though I used a tutorial found in the internet and not school materials.
The tutor didn’t even show us how to use includes. And it’s like the most basic thing ever. Or is that only my opinion? x_x”
[EDIT:] I forgot to mention one thing, which can be considered as the most positive side of this classes: course of Flash for idiots ;D, so the tutor showed us, step by step, how to make few basic effects. When we had Flash on CG&M it was like “click here, here, here and here and poof! it works!” and half of the group was like “WTF has just happened? O_O”. Yup. That’s us.
Of course, the materials we got are done in such weird and hazy way that if you don’t have your own notes, you’ll probably not know what to do anyway. But still, it was a good start :).[/EDIT]
- Multimedia Devices. The only subject hardware oriented so far. I really like our tutor and classes are even more interesting. It’s one of those subjects which you just want to learn, because you know it will be useful in the future. Not only will you be able to choose the best TV or monitor for your needs, but also show your boss a way to lower electricity bills ;).
We also had calsses about tablets. I was the one responsible for the devices, meaning: I took two tablets with me, personal and borrowed from work ;D. I’m not really a show-off type, but my lovely tablet is Wacom Intuos3 A3 <3 and I just had to take it with me ;D. I might not have skills, but I have the hardware… and it doesn’t mean that I wouldn’t prefer it the other way round, but oh well.
And the worse part of this year? Except from all those economy-oriented subjects there’s the worse one: English. No, I don’t have any problems with it, it’s the opposite. My group, the most “advanced” group, is on intermediate level. I graduated high scholl on advanced level. Intermediate is two levels lower.
Ok, my English is not perfect, but for god’s sake! Intermediate? How many times am I supposed to “learn” what’s the diference between Present Perfect and Present Simple? It’s not a primary school. I really thought that since it’s Informatics, which is BASED on English, this level will be higher. I’d really be happy if we were on Upper-Intermediate, because it’s much harder than Advanced, but no. The best group is on a level I were in junior high.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I like this 3rd term. I really do. It just makes me mad that I learned much more from on-line tutorials and at work than at school. I mean, Uni. Well, whatever.
[EDIT:] I’ve added a few links to blogs I enjoy reading.

Roflmao. Wow, I kinda miss school. The college I went to was a technical college and I only received a two year degree, so I had a mix of both required (Economics, Math, etc) and career based (Databasing, ASP, etc) in both my first and second year (or more like my entire first year, as I only went to school for 19 months).
Databasing is extremely simple…until you go into trying to create multiple tables connecting to one another (in which I’ve got up to six tables all interconnected to one another for work). Then it becomes royal pain…and if it makes you feel better, I had to help teach my teacher how to Database so he could teach the class. LOL.
I would figure Computer Graphics & Multimedia would be more multimedia based (such as creating advertisements, prints, commercials, etc) but I suppose game development works. Flash based games are kind of not exactly where professional game developers should be working on though (that is, if you’re going into the field of game development). Or, to my knowledge, you should at least be learning some sort of 3D program for game development too.
Web Design sounds more like a web DESIGN class, not as development class. LOL. And in my web development class (in which I forgot the actual name of the course), I learned ASP.NET instead of PHP (which was painful). My teacher didn’t know ANYTHING and kept asking for my assistance, in which I had never touched ASP before then either. PHP is actually very simple. I plan to create a tutorial site with a number of PHP tuts, so even if you didn’t learn it in school, hopefully my site can help you learn more PHP, no? Lol.
Also, you can create a frame-like design with DIV/CSS, but it’s actually more annoying than not. Then again, I’ve just been against frame-like designs for a long time so I suppose I’m really biased.
Multimedia devices…hardware…I dreaded all of my hardware classes, but I kind of enjoyed it too. Unfortunately, my hardware teacher wasn’t used to teaching people who knew nothing (like me) regarding hardware so everything in class was way over my head. Thankfully, I managed to pass anyway (with quite high marks LOL).
If you ever get the chance to learn C++ or Java, really, take the time with it. Those two are two of my favorite programming languages to learn. Sadly, I don’t get the chance to work with either language anymore, but if possible, I would love to continue learning them. Seeing as they’re still being used today too, I’d say they’re a lot more useful than Pascal. LOL.
Anyway, my comment’s getting kind of long so I’ll end it here. Best of luck in uni~ AND, I’ve concluded university is kinda useless. LOL.

@Mike: już się rozpędziłam :P
Na PJWSTK jest coś takiego jak sztuka nowych mediów, otworzyli to chyba w tym roku. Niestety jest jeszcze droższe niż WSB i trzeba pokazać teczkę x_x”.
@Megori: the only thing that studies are useful for is the degree aka a piece of paper where someone has written that you actually completed your studies. There are employers who care only about the degree. Ok, you may be good, but without this piece of paper, sorry.
As for CG&M and Flash games: none of is really interested in becoming proffesional game developer. Flash is perfectly enough for us ;).
We also thought it would be more ‘media’ oriented. It’s not and we just have to survive it XD. I don’t think that we will have anything of the kind. There will be digital photography and esthetics & composition and that’s probably it.
Well, we will see. I’m in the middle of my studies and it only gets better with each term :).

Regarding the piece of paper thing (about uni), I agree. T_T Workplaces are horrid nowadays at the fact that they are only willing to hire someone with a degree…since a degree does not always mean a person knows what they’re doing (such as a classmate of mine who I swear was given a passing grade because all of my instructors were too annoyed with him to get him in class again).

Megori: “a classmate of mine who I swear was given a passing grade because all of my instructors were too annoyed with him to get him in class again” – yeshh! So there’s still hope for me to graduate Naval Engineering!!!!!!!!! ;]

Feh. Apparently my cousin said there’s no way of knowing what the courses in uni are like for sure – until you get pretty stuck in them. -_- I do think that the “no paper, no job” mentality sucks, but that’s how it is for most employers.
If there’s one thing I can say, however, it’s that I don’t believe in too many grammar drills. Neither does my mum, who, ironically, is an English teacher. xDYou see, most native English speakers aren’t too bothered with whether the sentence is in Present Perfect, Present Continuous etc; they just speak! We don’t go through a “ton of grammatical rules” before picking out the right words.
I bet if you go up to a person who speaks English and ask “how do you know which particular tense to use” or something like that, usually, you’ll probably hear “ionno really.” Unless the person is a geek and can actually explain the hows and whys of tenses every time you ask them.
For the record, you can tell your tutor that PHP includes is pretty basic too. =)

@Ari: as for the grammatical stuff – I’m pretty aware of what you said and that’s why Intermediate level annoys me so much.
The higher you get the less crap like this you are ought to learn. When we were on Advanced level and the lower group asked us for help, it was like that:
- You should have used a different tense.
- Why?
- …
Most of the time it took us a while to recall the rules :). We just knew.

A thing with the useless subjects is the same on each Uni I guess. Do I have to mention most of my subjects are the ones of philosophy, economy, Environment Engineering kind? The only one truthfully Naval Engineering oriented is Sea Technology, which I simply A.D.O.R.E ;) And screw maths/physics and so on >>.
You’re creating a GAAAME? Czizas…please, no gays in it this time…beg ya’ >.>
Ahh, back to studies (was the previous paragraph a kind of studies offtopic? :P) – I’m afraid, but I don’t believe there’s any webdesign/design-like faculty in Poland anywhere…Warsaw maybe…Cracov perhaps…but please, in Gdansk? ;] You’ll have to study by yourself ;D
About English…I missed my english schools’ (Profi Lingua in anyone ask…) CAE Course applyind deadline this semester, and it looks like I’ll have to wait till September 2009 :/ My Eng skills are way but way lower than this…6 months ago ;P Wanna talk in English on MSN? ;P Don’t even give fucking chance you’ll get what I’ll be sayin’ but well…
and about Present Perfect…I still miss the difference between PP and Past Simple…maybe you’ll clarify this for me one day ;D
Cheers!
